Celtic confident ahead of SPL start

Friday, August 14th, 2009

Celtic will begin their 2009 Premier League campaign on Saturday, bursting with confidence after having secured a place in the Champions League playoffs by overturning a first leg deficit against Dynamo Moscow with a 2-1 win in Russia.

The Hoops are favourites amongst many to claim back the Scottish Premier League title in 2010 given that the club has recruited a clutch of talented young players, whilst arch-rivals, Rangers, will have to make do with the squad that took the to the title in 2009.

Tony Mowbray’s team kick off their SPL campaign with a match against Aberdeen on Saturday, and will then face a tough test next week in the form of a Champions League playoff against English giants, Arsenal. It is this match that is likely to occupy the minds of Celtic’s players as they prepared to begin the new season in earnest.

“The fact that they are in the top four in the Premier League ranks them as one of the best teams in the world,” Mowbray told the Guardian. “That will be the case and the supporters have to understand the quality of player we are playing against on Tuesday night.”

Rangers beat Falkirk to take Scottish double

Monday, June 1st, 2009

Glasgow Rangers claimed the Scottish double on Saturday, defeating a gutsy Falkirk side 1-0 in the Scottish FA Cup final to add that trophy to the league trophy they won the previous weekend.

A spectacular strike by Rangers’ Nacho Novo proved to be enough to put down the challenge from a brave Falkirk side that entered the match on the back of a fierce battle for Premiership survival against Inverness.

The result capped an impressive turnaround for Rangers, who had started the season in the worst possible manner, losing to FBK Kaunas in the early stages of the UEFA Cup – after having reached the final of the tournament the previous season.

“It can always get better in terms of the team and the squad. With a bit of luck we can maybe add to that and look to strengthen,” said Rangers assistant manager Ally McCoist. “But in terms of what the boys achieved in the last two years the team deserve all the credit going.”

“Last year was so close to being the best season in the club’s history. It ended up being, in many people’s eyes, a disappointment when we lost the league on the final day. We can sit and talk about it all day if we deserved or we didn’t deserve it. The fact is we didn’t win it. I just felt that this year it was a real reward for the players.”

2009 Scottish FA Cup Final Preview

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Venue: Hampden Park
Date: 30/05/2009
Time: 15:00 BST
Weather: 21°C, chance of showers

Glasgow Rangers take on Falkirk in the final of the 2009 Scottish Cup at Hampden Park on Saturday.

Rangers are the clear favourites to take their second consecutive Cup on Saturday afternoon after clinching the Scottish Premier League title last weekend with a victory over Dundee United.

Falkirk, meanwhile, come into Saturday’s match having narrowly avoided relegation to the Scottish second division with a win over Inverness in the final weekend of league fixtures.

If history repeats itself, Falkirk are destined to leave Hampden with silver medals on Saturday. The two clubs have met four times this season, with Rangers prevailing on each occasion.

Bookmaker William Hill has priced Rangers as favourites to win the Scottish FA Cup with odds of 3/10. Falkirk are clear outsiders at a price of 10/1.

Handicap markets provide better value with Rangers paying out 5/6 with a goal handicap, and Falkirk offering 13/5 with a goal added to their final score after regulation time.

William Hill is offering dozens of other betting markets for the 2009 Scottish FA Cup final, including exciting, high-value scorecast and goalscorer betting markets .

Rangers wary of Falkirk

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Glasgow Rangers will not be taking anything for granted when they take on Falkirk in the Scottish Cup final at Hampden Park on Saturday.

Rangers are on the verge of securing a double for the season after stealing the Scottish Premiership from arch-rivals Celtic last weekend, and are the overwhelming favourites to defeat a club that narrowly avoided relegation last week.

However, Rangers assistant coach Ally McCoist, who coached the club to the Scottish Cup title in 2008, says that Falkirk will come into the match full of confidence after a crucial, morale boosting win over Inverness last weekend.

“There are maybe a few teams I’d like to be playing rather than Falkirk,” McCoist told the BBC.

“On their day, they pass the ball as well as anyone and they will be flying after the weekend they’ve had. I look on them as being a really dangerous animal and we will have to be very well guarded and at the top of our game to win at Hampden.”

“Falkirk will really come out and have a go; I don’t have any doubt about that.”
